Practical Examples of Algebraic Expression Addition

MATH-9 (1)

Do you think your child is not getting clear concepts due to a lack of practice? Or your kid is just practicing the limited number of questions available in their academic book? Did you just say yes?  Don’t worry you are never too late to encourage your child to start a new habit.

Finding questions for practicing a new concept of math can be time-consuming. However, at the same time, it is very important to practice a set of variety of questions to have a clear grasp on the concept. If you are a parent and your child is learning algebraic expressions these days; or you a a student and searching for practice questions on the addition of algebraic expressions then this article is for you.

Steps for Addition of Algebraic Expression

You might know the basic steps and approaches for the addition of algebraic expressions. If not, Let us have a basic idea of the strategy:

The addition of algebraic expression can be done in two different methods:

  • Horizontal method
  • Column method

Example of Horizontal method of addition

E1: 9x+9y+9

E2: 7y+7+7x

To perform addition on E1 and E2:

E1= 9x+9y+9

E2=7x+7y+7

E1+E2

= (9x+9y+9) + (7x+7y+7)

= (9+7)x + (9+7)y + (9+7)

= 16x+16y+16

Example of Column method of addition

E1: 9x+9y+9

E2: 7y+7+7x

Rearranging E2 for simplification: E2= 7x+7y+7

To perform addition :

E1: 9x+9y+9

E2: 7x+7y+7

E1+E2: 16+16y+16

Some Practice Examples in Addition of Algebraic Expression

EX1:

Find the perimeter of a triangle with the side given as

4p+ 3pr + 35

-8pr+ 3r+ 26

4p+5r+20

Ans:

Let us consider the sides of the triangle to be A, B, and C.

A= 4p+ 3pr + 35

B= -8pr+ 3r+ 26

C=4p+5r+20

The perimeter of the triangle is the sum of all its sides, i.e.  (A+B+C)

Hence, the perimeter is:

+4p + 3pr + 35

- 8pr + 26 +  3r

+4p + 20 +  5r

+8p -5pr+ 81 + 8r

The perimeter is 8p+8r-5pr+81

EX2: Simplify the given algebraic expressions.

  1.   5x²+35x+9xy+10-10y+6y²+3x²

Ans: 8x²+6y²+35x-10y+9xy+10

  1.  5xy-3(2x-3+3xy)-(5y+3y-3xy)

Ans: 5xy-3(2x-3+3xy)-(5y+3y-3xy)

=5xy-6x+9-9xy-5y-3y+3xy

=-6x+(-5-3)y+(5-9+3)xy+9

=  -6x-8y-xy+9

EX3: 5x²y+9xy+6xy²+3x²-5x²y+9xy+6xy²

Ans: 5x²y+9xy+6xy²+3x²-5x²y+9xy+6xy²

= (5-5)x²y + (6+6)xy² + (9+9 )xy + 3x²

= 12xy² + 18xy + 3x²

FAQs (Frequently Asked Queations)

Q1: How can I calculate the sum of algebraic expressions?

Ans: Combine like terms and constants independently to obtain the final result when determining the addition of algebraic equations.

Q2: What is an expression in algebra?

Ans: A mathematical expression that contains variables, constants, and operators is called an algebraic expression.

Q3: How are algebraic expressions added or subtracted?

Ans: Algebraic expressions can be added or subtracted by first organizing them, and then combining coefficients of like terms and constants separately.

Q4: In an algebraic expression, is it possible to add two or more dissimilar terms?

Ans: Contrary to terms in algebraic formulas, we are not able to add.

Q5: Is it possible to include more than one similar term in an algebraic expression?

Ans: Yes, similar terms can be added to algebraic expressions.
