What is the Kangaroo Math Test? 

The Math Kangaroo also known as the Kangaroo Math test is an international mathematical competition held annually in March for students from grades 1-12. The Exam originated in Australia and students from over 77 countries participate annually. 

In 1980 teachers in Australia started a new mathematic revolution by conducting competitive math exams that cover mind-twisting questions to enhance students’ engagement in math learning. In 1991, the idea came to Paris and they named it Math Kangaroo representing its Australian history. Gradually the Math Kangaroo became significantly famous and in 2020, for the first time the Math Kangaroo was conducted online in the USA. In 2024, more than 44000 students participated in Math Kangaroo USA.

With a mission of making math interesting and fun for students, the Math Kangaroo test is open for any student in grades 1-12. The Math Kangaroo aims to develop students’ creative thinking and problem-solving abilities to boost their confidence in math for an intellectual future. 

Participating in Math Kangaroo is an easy task. First, parents or guardians must register their child online or offline by filling out the registration forms that can be obtained from the school, the local organizers, or a national representative group.

The registered students will get an email invitation along with more details on how to take the test.  At each level, the top three scorers get medals and certificates, and those who perform very well may be eligible for extra rewards like scholarships or vacations overseas for math summer camps.

The Math Kangaroo Exam Format

The Math Kangaroo exam is conducted for students from grades 1-12 at different grade levels. Every level has different difficulty levels and total scores.

In the Math Kangaroo test, there are 24 questions for students in grades 1-4 and 30 questions for students in grades 5 and higher. The exam is conducted for 75 minutes.
